ARCHAEOLOGICAL BACKGROUND

The first prehistoric archaeological excavation in Serbia in 19th century occured right here. The most significant
sites in the region are numerous prehistoric tumuli- barrow graveyards from the Bronze Age. But, anyone
have not found a permanent settlement from this period, up to now. We presume that these tumuli had been
made by a transhumance cattle-breeding human society.

There are two chronologically heterogenous layers of burrying in prehistory in the region. The most ancient one
includes tumuli placed on tops and hills, and the succeding one, with larger tumuli in small valleys. Older
tumuli were constructed of stones and are not so large (R = 5-10m, h = 1m), but the younger ones are made
in combination of soil and stone, up to 2m high, with radius over 25m.

Besides these graveyards from Early and Middle Bronze Age, we have also found graveyards from 17th to 19th century, which are not subject of this excavations. On these graveyards we documented very interesting tombstones.

Durring the last decade, archaeological team of the PSC has made systematic field surveys on the territory of Bukovac and Golubac Fields, and organized there archaeological excavations for the first time after 111 years!
